Biology Animals Unit Vocab:Determination: Process by which stem cells become committed to develop into only one type of cell.
Differentiation: process by which committed cells acquire the structures and functions of highly specialized cells. Tissue: Any of the distinct types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products. Organ: a group of different types of tissues that work together to preform a specific function or related functions. Organ System: 2 or more organs that work in a coordinated way to carry out similar functions. Homeostasis: The tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, esp. as maintained by physiological processes. Feedback: info that is compared with a set of individual values and aids in maintaining homeostasis. Negative Feedback: control system for homeostasis that adjusts the body’s conditions when the conditions vary from the ideal. Positive Feedback: control system in which sensory information causes the body to increase the rate of change away from homeostasis. Thermoregulation: is the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries, even when the surrounding temperature is very different. |
